About Orthodontics
In the early days of orthodontics, there was only one way to straighten teeth: large metal bands and brackets affixed to the teeth. While their smaller and more comfortable equivalent is still the most popular option, there are many possibilities when it comes to creating a beautiful smile. At Portland Braces, we’re proud to offer various types of braces, each with its own unique set of advantages.
We offer many types and levels of orthodontic care tailored to each patient and his or her specific needs. Our complimentary exam and recall supervision program allow us to identify treatment needs at an early age.
Different Braces for Different Orthodontic Needs
Traditional Metal Braces: These are the oldest treatment in orthodontics and they’re still the most popular option available. Made of high-grade stainless steel, modern braces are thinner, lighter, and more comfortable than their predecessors, and metal braces present one of the most durable, reliable, and cost-effective forms of treatment available.
Damon Braces: Damon Braces offer a broader, healthier smile in less time and with greater comfort than conventional braces, thanks to the patented slide mechanism that connects archwires to the brackets. This system reduces friction and enhances oral hygiene by eliminating elastic ties, allowing the wire to move freely.
Clear Aligners: This technique consists of a series of clear, removable aligners to straighten the teeth. The aligners are virtually invisible when worn and are easy to pop in and out for brushing, flossing, eating, and drinking. This means almost no one will know you’re straightening your smile, you can still enjoy all your favorite foods, and maintain oral hygiene. While clear aligners have unique advantages, they may not be suited to all orthodontic conditions. Often, a combination of clear aligners and traditional braces is an excellent treatment choice.
Braces or Clear Aligners and Surgery Combined: Sometimes adult patients benefit from a combined orthodontic-orthognathic jaw surgery treatment plan. Dr. Schnepper has extensive training and interest in this form of treatment, and welcomes the opportunity to discuss its merits with patients who might benefit from this approach. We value the benefits of a healthy mouth and smile, and to that extent we make decisions about tooth removal as treatment warrants.
